Hiking Ireland’s Highest Mountain in Darkness - Carrauntoohil Part 1

On September 22nd, under rare perfect conditions, we began our Carrauntoohil sunrise hike — Ireland’s highest peak at 1,038m. Starting at Cronin’s Yard at 3:40am, the night sky revealed the Milky Way in breathtaking clarity. With only small flash lamps, we made our way through the Devil’s Ladder in total darkness. We lost the trail, faced steep cliffs, and lost precious time — but safety comes first on the mountain.

Despite missing the very first light, the colors of dawn began to ignite the horizon as we pushed forward, exhausted but determined. This is Part 1 of our journey — the climb through darkness, chasing the sunrise.
