Understanding the Halal Matter –

Halal certification means that any food or product with this tag is permissible for consumption by followers of Islam. This tag assures them that no haram ingredient was used and no haram process was followed in making the item.

And Haram –
This is an Arabic word meaning “prohibited or forbidden.” According to the Quran, some things are haram for Islam followers, such as alcohol, animals that are unhealthy or dead before halal slaughter, blood and its by-products, pork, and stunned meat not processed via halal methods.

In many Islamic countries, governments themselves provide halal certification, and in some countries, it’s even mandatory for products.

In India, almost all processed food shows FSSAI certification, but this authority does not provide halal certification.

However, several private companies provide halal certification, marking products as permissible for Islam followers.

On 18 November 2023, the UP government issued an order immediately banning the sale of halal-certified products.

This decision came just hours after an official spokesperson said the halal tag was being misused to manipulate religious sentiments and spread ‘propaganda’.

It was reported that some organizations allegedly provided fake ‘halal’ certificates, taking advantage of people’s faith to trick them into buying their products.

Interestingly, anyone following any religion can consume halal-certified food or products, but remember to follow the laws applicable in your location.
