🇹🇭🇨🇴 THAILAND–CAMBODIA BORDER HEATS UP AGAIN

Gunfire was heard on September 27 along the disputed frontier between Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani province and Cambodia’s Preah Vihear.

What do the sides say?

➡️Thailand claims Cambodian forces opened fire with machine guns and mortars on its positions.

➡️Cambodia denies this, stating Thai troops initiated the "provocation" by shooting towards a Cambodian base, which they chose not to reciprocate.

This incident comes just a day after Thailand's prime minister announced a plan to hold a referendum on revoking two key border agreements with Cambodia (from 2000 and 2001).

👉The decades-old dispute over the 817 km border flared up dramatically in July, resulting in the deadliest clashes in over a decade (48+ killed, hundreds of thousands displaced). The clashes ended only after a ceasefire brokered in Malaysia.

👉Revoking the agreements is controversial; experts warn it could create a legal "vacuum" and must be carefully managed with Cambodia to avoid further escalation.
