THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (PART4) We are a Work in Progress
The evening before His Crucifixion, Jesus spoke to His Disciples about the Father’s sending of the Comforter/the Holy Spirit who would come after His departure. He was preparing them to receive their spirits being made holy… (John 14:16-17… “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter (another with the same heart and puposes as Jesus), that he may abide with you for ever (Jesus, being in a finite form, was contrasting Himself with the Holy Spirit, Who is omnipresent, and therefore able to be there with each Disciple when He is gone); Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”) When we look at Jesus’ words in preparing His Disciples for the future work of the Holy Spirit to be “in them” as opposed to their present experience with the Holy Spirit just ‘dwelling with them,’ we see as a consequence of that indwelling power of the Holy Spirit, He first brings to their attention that there would be a work of a deeper loving communion with the Father and Son, and that communion would be centered around all His loving and instructive Words spoken over the last 3 ½ years. (John 14:21-23… “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.”) The Holy Spirit would supernaturally bring back to their memory Jesus’ Words, which were directed by the Father, that they might understand the mind of the Father. (John 14:24-26… “He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” See also John 15:12-15… “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.”) Jesus’ Words of His peace would accompany them (such as John 14:27… “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”) while the Holy Spirit enlightens and encourages them in the Father’s purging love, which is discovered in the instructive Words of selflessness of His Son, that they would willingly abide in it for their furthering of a personal inward transformation… being then powerful in prayer and preaching, thereby bearing much fruit in their lives and bringing glory to the Father. (See John 15:1-16… See also 16:7-8… “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment…”) The Holy Spirit would guide them into all the truth regarding the Word made flesh, and things past, present, and future… all bringing glory unto the Father and Son. (John 16:13-15… “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”) We note that in all Christ’s instructive words in the preparing of His Disciples for the Work of the Holy Spirit within them, there was no mention of supernatural gifts, which they had experienced much of while the Holy Spirit was with them. Now, the Work of the Holy Spirit would be seen in their manifesting the fruits of the spirit/Spirit. (Likewise, we are to allow the Word to sanctify us and the Holy Spirit to manifest in us the fruits of the spirit/Spirit… Christlikeness.)
Jesus departed for the last time after having bid the disciples to tarry in Jerusalem, “until you be endued with power from on high.” (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4-9) Power from on high speaks to their soon coming Baptism/immersion in the spiritual medium of the Holy Spirit (as opposed to water) that would give them holy (‘holy’ meaning ‘divinely-given power, set apart for sacred use’) spirits (the ‘spirit’ being the life-force given by God at creation to animate the soul and body in the image of God in the Earth to His glory). The redeemed person’s spirit made holy is a landing ground for the Holy Spirit. Being born again was the first step, water baptism was the second, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit is the third… (note in certain cases, such as with Cornelius and his household, they were first baptized in their spirits by the Holy Spirit, then they were water baptized). The sacred purpose for this impartation of the Divine nature of God is to then make our souls holy. 1st Peter 1:9-10a… “Receiving the end (goal) of your faith, even the salvation of your souls. Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently…” See Philippians 2:12 where it says we are to… “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” We are a work in progress. This work in our souls is the reason we need the power of the Holy Spirit. By our choices (denying this/embracing that), we can either empower the flesh or empower the spirit. Whichever we feed is what is going to grow. The Holy Spirit helps us commune with the Father and the Son and to incorporate the Word of God in our lives, empowering us to walk out holy sanctified lives.
The Holy Spirit was sent from the Father on the day of Heaven’s inauguration of Jesus as Heaven’s High Priest Mediator, presumably on the Day of Pentecost, in the first place to the believing Jews, in the Holy Spirit’s new capacity of making holy (setting apart/sanctifying/consecrating) a believer’s spirit, that through the spirit of man and the power of the Holy Spirit, the soul might be brought into the image of God… a glorious happening in answer to the Son of Man’s personal sacrifice and victory over satan. Jesus now being in the office of High Priest, whose Atonement offering for fallen man is marvelously received by the Father in Heaven. (It being unfathomably difficult to capture with words the intensity of the emotion and awesomeness of this indescribable scene that took place when Jesus’ Blood was offered upon the Heavenly Altar for the Atonement of man. The fullness of the word ‘Atonement’ meaning: Redemption, Ransom, Propitiation, and Reconciliation.)
The Holy Spirit’s initial working on the disciples, in the bringing of man back to the Father, would by necessity be then an internal work upon their willing spirit, but with depleted power as a result of the fall of Adam within all men. Therefore it started with the Atonement ‘gift’ of our spirits being made holy (which is the impartation of “the divine power” of God), that we “…might be partakers of His divine nature. (See 2nd Peter 1:1-4… “Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: Grace (power) and peace be multiplied unto you through the (growing in the) knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power (in that our spirits were made holy) hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him (in the Holy Spirit’s revealing of His Word) that hath called us (the redeemed person) to glory (the favor of God) and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these (received knowledge of the Father from His Son’s Word) ye might be partakers of the divine nature (in transformation in Christlikeness), having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”) This is a big deal… let us note in these verses written by Peter how they align with Jesus’ Words in John Chapters 14 & 15 concerning the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit to them and to us that have obtained like precious faith (their spirits being made holy, as ours have been)… how then that divine power upon the soul to bring unto holiness is multiplied through the knowledge of the will of the Father and Jesus found in the Holy Spirit’s revealed Words of Christ, Who then leads us on to deeper communion and to transformation, which is to say unto becoming partakers of the divine nature (note that when we allow the cares of this World or the lust of other things keep us from walking in godliness, we break the momentum of our progression of being transformed into the image of Christ). The work of the Holy Spirit is to reveal/bring us redeemed into the Truth of the Son and the Father found in the Words of Christ, and effect others through our powerful/power-filled testimony of a work thereby being done in us… a work unto sonship and becoming joint heirs with Jesus in His heavenly Kingdom. Any other life lived is to fall short of the grace/power of Jesus’ Atonement.
