Indianapolis, IN - An Indianapolis police officer survived being shot four times after a gun was pulled on him while trying to detain multiple individuals. Fortunately, the officer wasn’t seriously injured, thanks in part to his ballistic vest.

Previous stories detail how 19-year-old Tyson Reach opened fire on an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Officer while the officer was outnumbered four-to-one during an attempted carjacking arrest. Now, dashcam footage released by IMPD reveals the entire shootout.

One of the suspects, 20-year-old Mandrell Ballard, immediately fled the scene the moment the stolen vehicle stopped near Emrich Drive and N. White River Parkway W. on July 29. Three others — 19-year-old Mahki Starks (the driver), 19-year-old Malique Starks (a passenger) and Reach — then all exit the vehicle and attempt to walk away.

While Officer Renteria holds Mahki Starks and attempts to detain him, Reach and Malique Starks walk around to the front of the stolen vehicle.

Reach can then be seen pulling out a handgun, pointing it at the officer, and opening fire while Officer Renteria is distracted.

Dashcam captures the entire shooting, with Officer Renteria yelling out while falling to the ground after being struck. The officer quickly returns gunfire as the suspects flee before applying a tourniquet to his leg.

Reach did not make it far, struck by the officer’s return volley. He was found lying in the parking lot a few dozen yards away.

Officers cautiously approached Reach behind a ballistic shield. Reach was reportedly not moving, but a handgun was spotted lying on the ground within reach.

Reach would ultimately be transported to a hospital, where he died nearly a month later from his injuries.

Malique Starks was found on the third floor of the apartment building where the shootout took place. A firearm was reportedly located near where he surrendered.

Mahki Starks was located by SWAT officers within his own residence in the apartment complex and also taken into custody.

Ballard, who initially fled the scene instantly, was captured several days later by the IMPD Violent Crimes Unit.

Both Starks and Ballard face charges of resisting law enforcement. Mahki Starks also faces one count of armed robbery.

Officer Renteria ultimately suffered three gunshot wound injuries during the shootout. A fourth round struck his ballistic vest but did not penetrate. He was taken to a hospital in stable condition but was released a few days later.

Officer Renteria continues to recover from his injuries, IMPD said.
