When it comes to African unity, some argue that the continent has historically consisted of hundreds of separate kingdoms, making it a big challenge to unite them all in the modern world. Others believe that it is essential for Africa’s countries to demonstrate solidarity if they are to develop following long years of colonialism.

Some smaller countries have managed to reach a consensus and merge into a single nation. For example, Tanganyika and Zanzibar united to form present-day Tanzania in 1964. However, there have also been failures. Kwame Nkrumah envisioned the creation of the United States of Africa, but due to opposition from external forces and African leaders unwilling to cede sovereignty, the project championed by Ghana's first president never materialized.

Today, the desire for unity among many African countries is evident in various initiatives, such as the establishment of a Free Trade Area and plans for a common currency. However, the main challenge is that Africa’s economy still depends on the West. Will the continent be able to begin financing its own projects to achieve unity and strengthen its position in the world?
