Welcome to this powerful sermon exploring what it means to truly live the Kingdom life as taught in Luke chapter 13. This message challenges us to move away from building our own “little kingdoms” — focusing on personal worries, pride, and self-centered concerns — and instead embrace living for the Kingdom of God with urgency, compassion, and faithfulness.
The sermon begins by reflecting on the idea of leadership and legacy, using examples of past U.S. presidents who each championed a central cause or legacy during their tenure. Similarly, the Kingdom life calls us to focus on something greater than ourselves, urging immediate repentance and transformation.
Key insights from Jesus’ teachings in Luke 13 include several challenging themes:
Urgency in the Kingdom Life: Jesus warns that all must repent or face judgment, emphasizing that the Kingdom lifestyle demands our immediate attention and action, not postponed or casual faith.
Compassionate Living: Jesus heals a woman crippled for eighteen years on the Sabbath despite opposition, illustrating that Kingdom living is full of compassion and breaks human rules when they hinder love and mercy. Kingdom people are called to care deeply for others beyond rigid traditions or personal agendas.
Small Ministry Moves: Through parables like the mustard seed and the yeast, the sermon highlights that God’s Kingdom starts small and expands over time through faithful, daily ministry efforts. The example of missionary Carlyle Hanna demonstrates how persistent, humble ministry can lead to exponential growth in God’s work.
Life of Demand and Challenge: The Kingdom life is not easy or comfortable. It is a narrow path characterized by repentance, sacrifice, and dedication to God’s will. Christ’s death and resurrection are central, shaping our call to live surrendered lives despite opposition or hardship.
Living as Ministers: Everyone in the community is called to ministry—ministering to newcomers, reaching out to the hurting, praying for others, and making decisions that reflect Kingdom values. Small acts of love and service compound to transform lives and communities.
Pastor Joshua Kennon also shares a real-life illustration of Kingdom living: a woman who responds with unexpected kindness after being wrongly accused in a drive-through line, choosing to pay for the man’s coffee and bless him despite his hostile behavior. This story exemplifies living with compassion, humility, and urgency—key marks of the Kingdom life.
This message concludes with a heartfelt challenge: examine your own life. Are you overly focused on your own “kingdom” — your finances, your family, your control — instead of prioritizing God’s Kingdom? This is a call to surrender those worries and concerns and to actively engage in the small but powerful acts of faithfulness that advance God’s Kingdom here and now.
Let this sermon inspire you to shift your focus from self to God’s calling. Embrace an urgent, compassionate, demanding, and Christ-centered Kingdom lifestyle. Your small ministry moves count. Your faithfulness matters. Go out with renewed purpose to be a light in your families, neighborhoods, workplaces, and beyond.
