PENNY
He was there in the summer house
I saw him

JANE
But, my dear, that’s impossible
You know that

PENNY
I know what I saw, and I saw him
Just as plain as the nose on my face
You can say what you will
It’s as simple as this
He was there in a chair and I saw him

GERARD
Perhaps I should give you a sedative
In the morning you’ll wake up
And all will be right
As a doctor, I think it’s imperative
That you sleep undisturbed
For the rest of the night

PENNY
Who are you?

JANE
It’s a friend of your father
Le Dr. Gerard

PENNY
Father!

JANE
He’s gone, dear

PENNY
Yes, that’s what you said
But I saw him
My father is dead

He was dead in the summer house
I saw him
I was there, and I spoke to him

JANE
But, Penny…

PENNY
I know what you think, but I saw him
It’s a vision I cannot erase
It’s a fact you should not be
So quick to dismiss
He was there in a chair
And I saw him

JANE
Penny, please—you are making a spectacle
And what you are saying is far-fetched at best

PENNY
Then go with me now
If you’re skeptical
You may put everything that I’ve said
To the test
Where’s my chair?

JANE
Still in the pool
We’ll retrieve it tomorrow

PENNY
Robert!
It seems I am bound to the bed
Would you carry me out to the shed?

ROBERT
Yes, Miss Penny

PENNY
Go on—Open it

ROBERT
But…it’s always kept locked

PENNY
But it was open

JANE
It’s always locked, Penny.

PENNY
There was a candle…

JANE
There’s no need for a candle here, Penny

PENNY
Take me back now
