The Ape and the Child

This 1931 study by psychologists Winthrop and Luella Kellogg raised their infant son Donald alongside a 7-month-old chimpanzee named Gua in their Florida home for 9 months. The goal was to humanize the chimp through identical treatment, but it backfired: Donald began imitating Gua’s vocalizations, showing language delays (a proxy for IQ impact in early development), leading to the experiment’s end. Gua learned no human language.

We are seeing this in children today.
