More than 100,000 federal workers to quit; US set for largest mass resignation in history

More than 100,000 federal workers will formally quit Tuesday as part of the latest wave of the Trump administration's deferred resignation program. The departures represent the largest single-year decline in civilian federal employment since the second world war. The resignations come as Congress faces a Tuesday deadline to authorize additional funding or trigger a government shutdown. The White House has ordered federal agencies to prepare plans for large-scale firings if partisan negotiations fail to produce a deal.
