Public safety is the main course of civic life. The badge of the NYPD was a symbol of that order. A flawed, human institution but our institution. You cannot build a city on social workers alone, when there are predators on the street. To dismantle the primary deterrent to crime, is to spit in the face of every bodega owner; every grandmother taking the train; every kid playing stickball.

This is a philosophy concocted in the sterile safety of a university seminar, not in the vibrant and sometimes dangerous reality of a city that never sleeps. Yet, Zohran Mamdani wants to send that cop away. He is not a reformer; he is an abolitionist at heart. His fervent past support for the "defund the police" movement, is a direct repudiation of the public safety, that allows communities to thrive.

Someone whom he described as "one of the nation's foremost Muslim leaders and a pillar of the Bed-Stuy community." This is the same Imam Wahhaj, who was named an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and who has publicly stated that homosexuality is a "disease" and has acknowledged Islamic law's position on executing homosexuals.

How can a candidate who promises to fund gender-affirming care and make NYC an LGBTQ+ sanctuary city and still warmly align himself with a figure who holds such violent, bigoted views? When you sit at a table with a man who validates the 1993 bombing of your own city and speaks of executing gay people; you have chosen your side. You've made the gravy with him.
