Satan the Accuser / Prosecutor, An In-Depth Study
1) Word & Concept Study (the legal frame)
• Heb. śāṭān (שָׂטָן) = adversary, accuser (cf. Zech 3:1; Job 1–2; Ps 109:6).
• Gk. diabolos (διάβολος) = slanderer (accusation-through-slander; e.g., 1 Pet 5:8).
• Gk. antidikos (ἀντίδικος) = legal opponent/adversary, explicitly forensic (1 Pet 5:8; cf. Luke 12:58; 18:3).
• Gk. katēgoros/katēgoreō (κατήγωρ/κατηγορέω) = accuser/to accuse in court (Rev 12:10).
Takeaway: Scripture portrays Satan not just as tempter but as a courtroom prosecutor pressing charges before God.

2) Core Courtroom Passages
A. Job 1–2 — Prototype Prosecution
• Satan appears among the heavenly council and requests permission to test Job (1:6–12; 2:1–6).
• Pattern: allege impure motives → seek access → afflict within limits.
• Limit: cannot cross God-set boundaries (Job 1:12; 2:6).
B. Zech 3:1–5 — Accusation vs. Priestly Cleansing
• Satan stands at Joshua’s right hand to accuse (legal posture; cf. Ps 109:6).
• The Lord rebukes Satan and changes the garments (forensic acquittal + cleansing).
• Picture of imputed righteousness overcoming accusation.
C. Rev 12:10–11 — The Accuser Cast Down
• Satan is called “the accuser of our brethren… day and night.”
• Overcoming strategy: “by the blood of the Lamb,” “word of their testimony,” and steadfastness unto death.
• Timing is debated (see §5), but the logic is clear: the Cross undermines his standing to accuse.
D. 1 Pet 5:8–9 — Your Legal Opponent
• “Your adversary (antidikos) the devil” depicts a lawsuit opponent who prowls to devour.
• Response: Be sober, resist, stand firm in the faith.
E. Other legal-flavored texts
• Luke 22:31–32: Satan asked to sift Peter, yet Jesus intercedes. Demanded for trial.
• Jude 9: Even Michael does not “rail” but says, “The Lord rebuke thee.”
• Rom 8:33–34: “Who shall lay any charge against God’s elect? … It is God who justifies; Christ intercedes.”
• Col 2:14–15: The “record of debt” nailed to the Cross; principalities disarmed.
• 1 Chron 21:1 (cf. 2 Sam 24:1): Satan incites sin, then seeks judgment (tempt-trap-accuse).

3) The Prosecutor’s Method (how the case is built)
1. Tempt → transgress (Gen 3; 1 Chron 21:1; Luke 22:31).
2. Cite the Law to demand penalty (1 Cor 15:56 “the strength of sin is the law”).
3. Slander & condemn the conscience (Zech 3; Rev 12:10; name = “slanderer”).
4. Exploit unresolved agreements (hidden sin, unforgiveness, unrenounced lies) as “legal footholds” (Eph 4:27).
But: The case collapses where the debt is canceled (Col 2:14), the verdict is justification (Rom 8:1,33), and the Advocate speaks (1 John 2:1–2).

4) Jurisdiction & Limits
• Permission-bound: Job 1–2; Luke 22:31.
• Rebuked & overruled: Zech 3:2; Jude 9.
• Cannot separate us from God’s love: Rom 8:38–39.
• Resisted by saints: James 4:7; 1 Pet 5:9; Eph 6:11–18.
