The SHA-256 algorithm that Bitcoin uses was invented by the NSA. This sparked a rumor, echoed by Dan Pena, who said, "If you really knew who created â‚¿itcoin, you'd run!"

Edward Snowden then breathed additional life into the rumor by helping develop Zcash (a privacy coin) over concerns that because Bitcoin is so transparent, via its open-ledger blockchain, it's also extremely traceable (this is true). Many of the Silk Road drug dealers and buyers were later arrested by the DEA because they could easily trace back the coins, to the wallets, to where those â‚¿itcoins were originally purchased, or cashed out through an Exchange, and get their real names/addresses via 'Know Your Customer' (KYC) protocols.

The Tor Browser, used to connect to the Dark Web, was created by the US Military as a way for spies and intelligence officials to communicate without it being traced or eavesdropped upon. And The World Wide Web was originally developed as an Intranet network so US government officials could communicate faster and directly. That doesn't mean the Tor (Onion) Browser, BTC or the Internet is controlled by them.
