Saladin Tells His Story as Sultan of Egypt and How He Conquered Jerusalem

I Saladin, was born in Tikrit, a city in what is now modern-day Iraq, in the year 1137. From a young age, I was immersed in the world of warfare and politics, learning the art of combat and leadership from my uncle, Shirkuh, who served as a military commander.

My rise to power began when I joined the service of the Muslim ruler Nur ad-Din, who was leading a campaign to unite the Muslim world against the Crusaders in the Holy Land. Under Nur ad-Din's guidance, I quickly rose through the ranks, proving myself as a skilled warrior and strategist.

After Nur ad-Din's death in 1174, I seized the opportunity to establish myself as the ruler of Egypt, founding the Ayyubid dynasty. As the Sultan of Egypt and Syria, I sought to consolidate Muslim power in the region and push back against the Crusader states that had occupied Jerusalem.

One of my most famous achievements came in the year 1187 when I led a military campaign to recapture Jerusalem from the Crusaders. In the decisive Battle of Hattin, my forces defeated the Crusader army, leading to the surrender of Jerusalem and several other key cities in the region.

Rather than seeking revenge or retribution against the Christian inhabitants of Jerusalem, I chose to show mercy and compassion, allowing them to leave the city unharmed. This act of chivalry earned me respect and admiration even from my enemies.

Throughout my life, I sought to uphold the principles of honor, justice, and compassion, earning me the title "Saladin the Wise." My legacy as a champion of Islamic unity and a formidable opponent of the Crusaders continues to inspire people around the world to this day.
