Over the weekend, Portland became the centre of violent confrontations after President Donald Trump deployed 200 Oregon National Guard troops to support federal agents outside the city’s ICE facility. The move came as Trump doubled down on his promise to crack down on Antifa, which he has labelled a domestic terrorist threat.

On the ground, footage captured by journalist Nick Shirley shows how tensions escalated after federal agents in riot gear issued warnings and began making targeted arrests. What began as daytime demonstrations quickly shifted into night time clashes, with Antifa-aligned protesters blocking entrances, chanting, and engaging federal officers in direct confrontation.

City leaders, including Portland Police Chief Bob Day, criticized the federal response, arguing the unrest was largely contained to one block and claiming the deployment was unnecessary and politically motivated. Local officials accused the Trump administration of exaggerating the scale of the protests.

Supporters of Trump’s move, however, argue the footage shows a city losing control, with Antifa activists escalating violence and federal agents forced to push back. The Portland clashes now stand as a key example in the broader national debate over Antifa, federal authority, and whether the federal government should intervene in cities struggling with political unrest.
