Eight unoccupied houses along North Carolina’s Outer Banks have collapsed into the Atlantic Ocean over about three days due to pounding surf from Hurricanes Humberto and Imelda.

The first five homes fell on Sept. 30, followed by a sixth later that evening, a seventh on Oct. 1, and an eighth on Oct. 2.

High tides and waves reaching 8 to 12 feet washed over dunes, causing the structures to slide into the ocean.

The National Park Service reported the collapses along Cape Hatteras National Seashore, USA Today has reported.

Conditions are expected to improve, though the surf remained strong on Oct. 2.
