The New Homeowner – Two Weeks Later

The house is wrong.

At night, my reflection in the mirror lags behind me, like it’s reluctant to follow. I covered one mirror with a sheet; in the morning, the sheet was gone.

Last night, I dreamed I was buried alive. I woke gasping, clawing at my mattress like it was dirt. My fingernails were packed with soil. Real soil.
