Chicago Cops Ordered to Stand Down in the Face of Violent Attacks Against ICE Agents

In a subsequent statement, Chicago police denied the order, asserting that officers "did in fact respond" to ensure traffic management and safety. Kristi Noem, the secretary of homeland security, described the attack as "an attack on brave law enforcement" and promised to send more troops to the city. Federal agents came under siege on Saturday when a group of ICE demonstrators, many of whom were armed, surrounded them and blocked their escape routes with their cars.

One dispatcher stated, "They ran the federal agent off the road when the offending vehicle crashed," before being told to hold units back. "Per the chief of patrol: clear everybody out; we're not responding over there," a male voice said a few seconds later. Responding officers who were already on their way said they were "blocked in" but would try to get out.
