Turning Nothing into Something: Black Folks’ Superpower

You ever notice how Black folks can take absolutely nothing… and turn it into something so good, even rich people start lookin’ confused? I’m serious—give us an empty lot, a Bluetooth speaker that halfway works, and a pack of hot dogs, and somehow… boom! You got a full-blown family reunion, two DJs, and somebody’s uncle on the grill talkin’ ‘bout, “Y’all don’t know nothin’ ‘bout real barbecue.”

We don’t even need chairs. We’ll flip over milk crates, pull out that one plastic chair with the crack in it (that’s for the lightest person, don’t play!), and suddenly—everybody sittin’, laughin’, eatin’, and vibin’ like it’s Essence Fest.

And let a bad situation happen—like a blackout. Other folks panic… us? We light candles, grab the Uno cards, and turn the living room into Showtime at the Apollo. Somebody start roasting, kids breakdancing, auntie pullin’ out leftovers like she’s on “Chopped.” We don’t fold under pressure—we season it.

That’s what I love about us. We don’t wait for joy… we create it. Outta nothin’. You can’t teach that. That’s culture. That’s soul. That’s us.
