Surprise asteroid flies by Earth at only 250 miles away

A small asteroid named 2025 TF safely passed Earth on Sept. 30 at roughly 250 miles (400 km) above the planet, near the same altitude as the International Space Station.

About the size of a couch, the asteroid measures 3 to 9 feet (1.2–2.7 meters) in diameter and was detected a few hours after its closest approach by the Catalina Sky Survey.

NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies calculated the flyby at approximately 262 miles (423 km) above Antarctica, though exact measurements have uncertainties.

While smaller asteroids like 2025 TF are harder to detect, astronomers frequently track larger near-Earth objects to monitor potential hazards, Space.com has reported.

Close passes of small, harmless asteroids are now spotted multiple times a week thanks to improving observation technology.
