The New Tetris - Four-Player Mode (Actual N64 Capture)
This is a capture of me and a three other people playing the multiplayer mode in The New Tetris for the Nintendo 64. This is not an emulator. This footage was captured directly from the Nintendo 64 using an actual The New Tetris cartridge. I'm player one, Bait is player two, Keet is player three, and Dawn is player four.

I already had some four-player footage of Dr. Mario 64 on my channel, but I was still missing multiplayer footage from The New Tetris, so while I was in Florida visiting Keet, I asked about playing this game. It turns out that Keet’s girlfriend, Dawn, is a big Tetris fan, so it took no cajoling to get her to play this game. Dawn is quite the skilled Tetris player and even stomped me for several rounds that aren’t even shown here because the capture card settings were incorrect for the first recording attempt. And that was with her forgetting that she could swap out the spare piece at any time.
Keet and Bait also joined in for this battle, and although Tetris isn’t really their game, they seemed to enjoy trying out this version for the first time. Plus, they ultimately got their revenge when it came time to play Dr. Mario 64.
I grew up playing various puzzle games because my mother loved them so much, and I of course had a Game Boy as a kid, which included Tetris as the pack-in game. I had my fair share of two-player Tetris battles on Game Boy, but when a four-player Tetris game was announced for the Nintendo 64, I knew I had to get it.
I picked up The New Tetris around 2000 or so, and whenever friends or family would visit, I would get them to play the game. The New Tetris introduces slight modifications to the original Tetris formula by allowing you to store and swap out a spare piece on the fly, and to form special 4 x 4 squares that can give you extra lines.
The New Tetris is probably most well-known for its impressive international soundtrack, which includes musical styles from various countries. I have the music set on random, but the game seemed to keep playing the Morocco track for some reason.
The multiplayer mode is excellent, but the single-player mode is also fairly robust since the game keeps track of your total lines and creates new structures once you have cleared enough. I still haven’t unlocked all of the structures, but I may get around to it one day.
Anyway, it was fun to play this again after several years, so enjoy the footage.
Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR 2 and the official N64 S-video cable at 60 frames per second. We’re using standard N64 controllers.
