Before A New Hope was A New Hope, it was Star Wars, and it introduced the audience to an intimidating spherical battle station called the Death Star. The plans to the Death Star were stolen from the Empire and wound up being carried within R2-D2 until making it safely to the Rebel base on Yavin. But in real life, there is an interesting story on the graphics of those technical readouts. As well, it is connected to lore in the Expanded Universe. Larry Cuba designed the graphics. The ILM crew built the model. There was a matte painting. David West Reynolds and others created schematics in the EU. We will look at the torpedo sphere and the Eye of Palpatine. The superlaser. Sublight engines. How does it all connect?
