Did Charlie Really Say This?
“Black women do not have the brain processing power to be taken seriously. You have to go steal a white person’s slot”. This is the misquote heard around the world, which was completely taken out of context by Karen Attiah. She was fired by The Washington Post for her misquote, specifically this one, after Charlie Kirk’s death.
Here is the New York Times rule on quotation marks:
Readers should be able to assume that every word between quotation marks is what the speaker or writer said.
Similarly, the AP Style Book declares a reporter should never alter a person’s words when they are placed between quotation marks, even to correct minor grammatical errors.
Does the correct wording and complete context change your mind on what your response is to what he said?
