This protest was quite large by Canadian standards. It began outside the Vancouver Art Gallery, in downtown Vancouver, BC, Canada. Several moving speeches were heard. The people then moved to the street and marched around the downtown core. Most were relatively young—I would guess under 40 or so, and from various cultural backgrounds. First Nations were also there in support. They completely understand the plight of the Palestinians in Gaza given their own history with Western oppression and the evil of the residential schools tragedy. This protest movement, called the “Intifada” in Arabic, meaning resistance to oppression, is now global in scope and growing rapidly. Palestine has become a symbol for all humanity’s right to self-determination and human rights. Personally, I feel that the era of Western colonialism and abuse of the Global South is rapidly coming to an end.
