Interview with Edda Göring

Edda Göring (1938–2018) was the only child of Hermann Göring, a leading Nazi official and commander of the German Luftwaffe, and his second wife, the actress Emmy Sonnemann. Adolf Hitler was named her godfather, and Edda's birth was celebrated with national attention in Nazi Germany. She spent her early years growing up in great luxury at the Göring family estate, Carinhall, surrounded by art and wealth looted by her father.

After the collapse of Nazi Germany, Edda's life changed drastically. Her father was convicted at the Nuremberg Trials and committed suicide before his execution in 1946, when Edda was only eight years old. She and her mother faced hardship and lost their privileged status, living quietly in Munich after being kept in Allied captivity for a period after the war.

Throughout her life, Edda Göring remained loyal to her father’s memory and was publicly unrepentant, defending his legacy and downplaying his involvement in Nazi crimes. She became notable for her interviews and legal battles to reclaim artworks and possessions seized after the war, most of which were unsuccessful. She died in Munich in 2018 at the age of 80, and her funeral was a private affair with little public acknowledgment.
