UNIT The Train To Everywhere.

When did I board this train? I can’t remember.
What is its destination? I’ve no idea.
It could be March or April; maybe November.
Why are the carriages so full at this time of year?

Men and women, young and old, occupy this train,
although I doubt any of them will take this route again.
Every now and then we stop at an abandoned station;
a passenger departs alone or my imagination
contrives this notion, possibly to pacify my fear,
for while I dread the terminus, I’d rather stay in here
away from all the stürm und drang of human stress and strain,
security and safety guaranteed inside this train.

Every hour a young lass wheels a trolley down the aisle,
with polystyrene cups of tea, assurance and a smile.
I light a cigarette and wonder at the world outside.
Is this really happening? I simply can’t decide.
Either way, I’ll sit here with a certainty I know.
In any case, I’m well aware there’s nowhere else to go.
