Look at that lovely viaduct – it’s so joyful to behold.
Who’d believe that structure could survive when it’s so old?
It witnessed 2 world wars with steadfast stalwart stoic pride,
a tribute to those labourers who tragically died.

When I walked through Arkham tunnel, I was so impressed;
200 yards of solid rock blasted from east to west.
Locomotives ceased to use it 30 years ago
and how many men died building it, we shall never know.

The lovely bridge that used to span the A339
was demolished by Alton Council when they closed the line.
That red brick arch was part of my childhood history
and those men who built it now remain obscured in mystery.
