The ancient nations that oppressed Israel can be seen as representing any modern power or system that uses fear, power, and violence to maintain control. These prophecies serve as a source of hope for those suffering from oppression, assuring them that GOD will ultimately bring justice and peace to HIS people.
Isaiah begins with an oracle against Babylon. This city, built by the Euphrates River, actually the river ran through the city. Ironically this river would play a role in Babylon’s defeat. The city was the pinnacle of beauty, culture, and human achievement in the ancient Near East, in the world at that time.
The LORD tells the people of Babylon to wail or howl about the destruction that is coming. He says their hands will go limp and their hearts will melt. They will look at each other in dismay, seized by agony. There will be no escape from the horrors that are to come.
14:1 For the LORD will have mercy on Yakob, and will still choose Israel (people and the nation) and settle them in their own land (future event from 586BC to 1948 AD the Jews did have their own land for the most part they did have Jerusalem under various kings). The strangers will be joined with them, and they will cling to the house of Jacob.
In that same way, GOD will choose to discipline Israel when required, and HE would even choose to use pagan nations such as Assyria and Babylon to bring about this discipline. At times it might even seem that the LORD rejected Israel, but ultimately HE would confirm HIS original choice and fulfill HIS promises.
The promise of restoration to their own land was also important. The Babylonians had forcibly exiled a lot of the population of Judah. The promise of return to their own land therefore was a powerful, wonderful, spectacular promise indeed.
This confirms what we already knew, that Israel’s years in Babylon were full of pain and turmoil. In that way, the captivity in Babylon was like their years as slaves in Egypt. Once again, the LORD will free HIS people and bring them to the Promised Land.
The LORD announces a day when HE will give real rest to believing Israel. They will have rest from sorrow, fear, and bondage. This rest is for every born again believer in Yeshua. Yeshua HIMself said: MAT 11:28, “Come to ME, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Isaiah has two aspects of prophetic fulfillment in mind. First, there is the immediate* and partial fulfillment regarding the empire of Babylon and its king.Second, there is the distant and ultimate fulfillment regarding the spiritual empire of Babylon, that is the world system and its king, Satan, Diabolos, the Devil…
