Vladimir Putin has admitted that Russia shot down the Azerbaijan Airlines plane that crashed on Christmas Day 2024, killing 38 people.

The flight from the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, to the Russian city of Grozny with 67 passengers and five crew members on board crashed near Aktau, western Kazakhstan, last year.

Russia admitted for the first time on Thursday that its air defenses were to blame for bringing down the plane, which attempted an emergency landing before exploding in a fireball.
