From surveys, about 70% of meat in UK supermarkets is religiously slaughtered—inhumane and illegal under laws restricting it to Muslims and Jews for their own use. Yet Muslims and Jews are only 7% of the population.
Local authority inspectors fail to enforce this, as do Trading Standards on labeling. Supermarkets dodge by claiming stunned meat isn't "true" Halal or Shechita, but it's either compliant or not—half-measures violate consumer laws.
Halal's cheapness has shuttered traditional slaughterhouses; animals often remain conscious for over 4 minutes, unlike stunned methods.
A recent parliamentary debate, led by ex-Reform MP Rupert Lowe, pushed for a ban and better labeling but failed—major parties oppose it, and Reform skipped it.
Halal meat now floods schools, prisons, restaurants, and military canteens, mainly for cost savings, exploiting regulatory loopholes via religious exemptions meant only for believers.
Kosher stays mostly within Jewish circles, but Halal enforcement lapses due to official cowardice and multiculturalism. Courts can mandate local inspectors to restrict Halal to Muslims only, slashing volumes, easing animal suffering, and leveling competition for regulated English abattoirs.
