Lumumba’s Africa. Algeria. Episode 78 | RT Documentary
Algeria was part of France for many years. By the mid-20th century, a fierce war for independence erupted, lasting eight years and ending in 1962, when France finally recognised Algeria’s sovereignty.
The country’s first president, Ahmed Ben Bella, pursued a policy of grassroots socialism, and nationalised land previously owned by Europeans. In 1965, power passed to Houari Boumédiène, who prioritised industrialization. Under his leadership, Algeria became one of Africa’s leading economies.
In the early 21st century, another prominent Algerian leader, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, hosted a series of major international summits, strengthening the country’s political influence.
Today, Algeria continues to play an important role in Africa – a nation that refused to submit to colonial rule, has produced remarkable leaders and grown into a respected political force on the continent.
