Pierce County, OR - Deputies with the Pierce County Sheriff's Office arrested a man who had to be pulled from a smoking box truck that crashed during a pursuit over the weekend.

According to the sheriff's office, the chase started Sunday night when a deputy spotted the stolen truck driving on 198th Ave East near Bonney Lake. When the deputy attempted to stop the truck, the driver fled and led deputies on a chase.

Video released by the sheriff's office shows a deputy using a PIT (precision immobilization technique) to try to stop the truck.

"Two attempted PITs, he drove out of both of them. Third time's a charm," the deputy is heard saying on video.

After the third PIT maneuver, the truck went off the road and crashed into a grove of trees. Deputies jumped out of their cruisers and ran to the truck, finding the driver and a passenger trapped inside.

The truck then started smoking, and screams were heard coming from inside the cab.

Deputies smashed a hole in the windshield, and the driver and passenger were able to crawl out of the truck.

Both suspects were treated at the hospital for injuries. The 42-year-old driver was booked into the Pierce County Jail on charges of possession of stolen property, eluding, and assault on a police officer.
