🧠 AUGUST 31ST: 3,200 PEOPLE DIED AND YOU PROBABLY DIDN'T KNOW Afghanistan earthquake killed 2,200 people, Sudan landslide buried entire village killing 1,000+ but most of us just didn't care. There's a scientific reason why - it's called climate amnesia. Harvard discovered our brains shut down when numbers get too big, we see statistics not people. When one person gets hurt we feel something, when 10 people get hurt we still care, but 2,200? Our brain says "not my problem" and moves on. Meanwhile our planet went wild - three tornadoes formed simultaneously over volcanic craters in Iceland, waterspout hit freezing Surgut Russia where this weather was basically impossible. The more disasters we see the less we feel, our empathy has a limit and we've reached it. This numbness isn't protecting us, it's making everything worse because when we stop caring about 2,200 people we stop preparing for when it could be us.
