Italy is signalling a potential shift in its Middle East policy as Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni indicated that the country is edging closer to formally recognising the state of Palestine.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit in Egypt, Meloni tied this possibility to the successful implementation of the recent Gaza ceasefire brokered between Israel & Hamas.

“Clearly, if the plan is implemented, Italy’s recognition of Palestine will certainly be closer,” she said, underscoring Rome’s commitment to supporting a 2 state solution while continuing humanitarian assistance for the people of Gaza.

Meloni emphasised that Italy is ready to contribute to stabilising the territory, including the potential deployment of Carabinieri forces under a UN mandate, to ensure security & aid the rebuilding process. She described Italy’s participation in the summit as a historic day & a significant opportunity to support peace in the region.

The Italian premier also praised the role of US President Donald Trump in brokering the ceasefire, calling it a great success & expressing hopes for continued diplomatic achievements, including progress in Ukraine.

Trump’s peace plan, first announced on 29th September, outlined a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, a ceasefire & the release of Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

Meloni’s statements signal a more proactive Italian approach toward Middle East diplomacy, balancing political recognition, humanitarian support & potential security contributions, all while emphasising the importance of international cooperation for lasting peace.
