THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS
HOSTED by DAVID FROST
(1962)
That Was the Week That Was (often abbreviated as TW3) was a groundbreaking British satirical television comedy programme that aired on BBC Television from 24 November 1962 to 28 December 1963. It played a pivotal role in the UK's early 1960s "satire boom," challenging social and political conventions by lampooning establishment figures, politicians, and institutions in a way previously unseen on British TV.
The programme featured a freewheeling mix of sketches, songs, debates, and monologues. It opened each week with a song titled "That Was the Week That Was," performed by Millicent Martin with lyrics written by David Kernan and Ron Grainer's theme music. The lyrics were updated weekly to reflect current news events.
Regular cast members included Lance Percival, who performed topical calypsos, and writers such as John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Peter Cook, Roald Dahl, and Dennis Potter. The show targeted figures like Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, the monarchy, the class system, and even the BBC itself.
One of its most memorable moments was a shortened, non-satirical episode broadcast on 23 November 1963, the day after President John F. Kennedy's assassination, featuring a tribute song "In the Summer of His Years" performed by Millicent Martin.
Despite its popularity, the BBC cancelled TW3 in December 1963, officially citing the upcoming 1964 general election as a reason, though many believed the decision was due to political pressure from establishment figures offended by the satire.
An American version aired on NBC from 1964 to 1965, also hosted by David Frost. The show's legacy endures as a pioneering force in political satire, influencing countless future programmes.
