We Forgot the Most Dangerous One: The Cone Snail

Cone snails may look harmless, but these beautiful sea creatures pack a powerful sting. Found mostly in tropical waters, including parts of northern Australia, they use a venomous harpoon like tooth to hunt small fish and marine life. While a few species carry venom potent enough to harm humans, encounters are extremely rare and usually happen when someone picks up a shell without realizing it’s alive. There’s no antivenom, but fatalities are exceptionally uncommon thanks to medical awareness and better coastal education. The best precaution is simple admire cone shells from a distance and never handle live ones. Living alongside cone snails is about curiosity and caution, not fear.
