Zijn (of Niet Zijn)

Zijn, of niet zijn…
Het is een vraag, verscholen onder mijn adem
Is het nu edeler om te lijden… of te slapen ( de slaap van de dood? )
Om de pijlen, de slagen, de duizend wonden van het lot te trotseren...
Of om de storm in stilte te beëindigen,
aan de onbekende poort van de dood?
.
Sterven… slapen… misschien dromen
Maar wat als dromen niet zijn wat ze lijken?
Want welke waarheden kunnen in die slaap komen?
Welke echo’s volgen nog, wanneer wij weg zijn?
.
Angst houdt het zwaard boven ons hoofd
Niet de pijn, maar wat voorbij de dood ligt
Dus dragen we de kwalen die we te goed kennen
En ruilen we geen kaart voor hemel of hel
Zijn, of niet zijn
Dat is de strijd in mezelf
.
Het hartzeer en de trots van de minachting van een man
Het verpletterende gewicht van doodgeboren dromen
Het uitstel van de wet, het onrecht van de tiran
De stille zielen die te lang hebben vastgehouden...
.
Wie zou dit alles dragen,
Als we niet bang waren
Voor dat onontdekte land,
Waaruit geen ziel ooit is teruggekeerd?
.
Angst maakt lafaards van ons allemaal
Verandert hoop in as, doet helden kruipen
En het geweten, dat te luid fluistert
Verdrinkt de wil die ooit trots rechtop stond
.
Zijn, of niet zijn…

To sleep, perchance to dream. Ay, there's the rub,
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil

Th'oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of desprized love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office, and the spurns
That patient merit of th'unworthy takes,

To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscovered country from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will,
And makes us rather bear those ills we have

Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pitch and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
