Imran Khan’s Peace Offer Met With Political Skepticism

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan claimed on Wednesday that imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan has offered to mediate between Pakistan and Afghanistan amid recent border clashes, but the proposal has drawn skepticism over its timing & feasibility.

Imran, who has been behind bars since August 2023 in a £190 million corruption case, reportedly conveyed through his lawyer that he could help resolve hostilities if released on parole. The former premier is also facing multiple trials under the Anti-Terrorism Act in connection with the 9th May violence.

Observers noted the political overtones of the offer, coming as tensions between Islamabad & Kabul have escalated over cross-border terrorism & military skirmishes that left several dead on both sides. A fragile ceasefire was announced earlier today.

Speaking outside Adiala Jail, Barrister Gohar quoted Imran as saying, “Release me on parole & I will solve the Afghanistan problem for you.” The PTI leadership has also raised repeated concerns about the health of Imran and his spouse.

Imran’s sister, Noreen Niazi, echoed the claim, saying the former prime minister was distressed by the repatriation of Afghan refugees and believed only political dialogue could bring peace. However, she admitted she did not expect authorities to consider the offer.

Critics argue that Imran’s renewed bid to position himself as a peacemaker may be seen as an attempt to regain political relevance while under conviction. Government sources have not officially responded to the statement.

A post from Imran’s verified X account run by party officials reiterated the need for inclusive dialogue involving Pakistan’s federal & provincial governments, tribal elders & the Afghan administration.

Despite the appeal, analysts remain doubtful that a parole release for mediation purposes will be entertained, given the gravity of the charges against the PTI founder & the current security environment.
