Senators will force a vote to prevent war on Venezuela without approval from Congress

Sen. Tim Kaine is leading a bipartisan push to force a Senate vote to prevent President Trump from unilaterally waging war in Venezuela, amid U.S. military strikes in the Caribbean and planned CIA operations in the country.

The resolution, co-sponsored by Sens. Adam Schiff and Rand Paul, comes after Trump authorized a recent strike on an alleged drug boat and signaled potential land operations.

Kaine and other lawmakers argue the administration has provided little evidence to justify these actions, which they see as illegal and unconstitutional, and stress that Congress must exercise its constitutional war powers.

Last week, a similar vote to limit Trump’s war powers narrowly failed, with support from a few Republicans, and Kaine hopes more GOP senators will back the new measure, NPR has reported.

Since September, at least five U.S. strikes have killed 27 people, though their identities remain unknown, highlighting growing concerns about secretive military actions.
