The phrase "Deporter in Chief" was coined by Janet Murguía, the president and CEO of the National Council of La Raza (now UnidosUS), in March 2014 to criticize President Barack Obama’s record number of deportations under his administration.

While protests pressured policy adjustments (e.g., pausing some family raids in 2016),👉 they did not involve physical attacks on ICE or CBP infrastructure, unlike more recent escalations under subsequent administrations.

Apprehensions averaged about 648,000 per year under Obama, down from over 1 million annually in the early 2000s.

About 3.35 million formal removals occurred, the highest of any presidency.

Interior removals (away from the border) averaged over 200,000 annually in Obama's first term.
