Venezuela Under Siege

The US has widened its military campaign against suspected narcotics traffickers, striking a drug vessel in the Caribbean on Thursday, an operation that reportedly left some crewmembers alive.

The Pentagon confirmed the strike but did not clarify whether surviving individuals received aid or were taken into US custody. Officials continue to label those targeted as narco-terrorists, a classification that has drawn increasing legal & political scrutiny.

This latest strike follows earlier US operations off the coast of Venezuela that killed at least 27 people.

Critics including Democratic lawmakers & legal experts have questioned whether these actions comply with international law, particularly the rules governing armed conflict.

The Trump administration maintains that the US is already engaged in an ongoing war against narco terror groups based in Venezuela, arguing that lethal force is justified after years of failed interdiction efforts.

The renewed campaign coincides with a significant US military buildup in the Caribbean, involving guided missile destroyers, F-35 fighter jets, a nuclear submarine & around 6,500 troops.

It also follows President Trump’s disclosure that he had authorised the CIA to conduct covert operations inside Venezuela, intensifying speculation that Washington is seeking to weaken or remove President Nicolas Maduro’s government.

In response, Venezuela’s ambassador to the United Nations, Samuel Moncada, has submitted a letter to the Security Council, demanding a formal determination that the US strikes violate international law & urging support for Venezuela’s sovereignty.
