Dark Days (2000)
This 2000 documentary, directed by Marc Singer, immerses viewers in the lives of a community of homeless people living in abandoned subway tunnels beneath New York City's Penn Station, known as the Amtrak tunnels. Filmed over two years by Singer, who lived among the subjects, it captures their daily struggles, resilience, and camaraderie as they build makeshift homes from scavenged materials, navigate dangers like rats and darkness, and face eviction threats from Amtrak. Through intimate interviews and stark black-and-white cinematography, the film reveals personal stories of addiction, mental illness, and societal neglect, culminating in the residents' relocation to housing with support from the Coalition for the Homeless, set against DJ Shadow's haunting soundtrack.
