A recent investigation by US federal agencies has uncovered a deeply concerning operation Chinese-enabled SIM farms functioning across major American cities.

These networks, described by intelligence experts as part of a broader influence campaign, are allegedly being used to radicalise young Americans, manipulate political discourse & incite social unrest.

The operation’s mechanics are both simple & sinister. Each SIM farm contains racks of servers fitted with hundreds of thousands of SIM cards, capable of generating millions of unique mobile numbers.

These numbers are then used to create & authenticate social media accounts making them appear as genuine users.

Once activated, these digital personas flood online platforms with targeted content, from divisive political narratives to subtle propaganda designed to erode public trust and polarise communities.

Officials involved in the investigation believe the process begins manually in China, where large teams coordinate account setups before handing control over to advanced AI systems.

Tools similar to ChatGPT are reportedly used to generate lifelike conversations & posts that evade bot-detection algorithms. Some chatbots can mimic dozens of personalities at once grooming users by maintaining believable, long-term interactions.

Homeland Security Investigations & the US Secret Service recently raided 5 such SIM farms in New York City, disabling over 300 servers tied to Chinese telecom operations.

Yet experts warn these raids only scratch the surface with an estimated 80 to 100 similar farms potentially active nationwide.

Perhaps the most alarming revelation is the dual use nature of these systems. The same networks that spread disinformation can also clone existing identities, conduct swatting operations or disrupt telecom infrastructure.

Every piece of data even when these systems are exploited by criminal cartels or extremist groups allegedly routes back to China, feeding into the country’s vast intelligence apparatus.

Platforms like Reddit and Discord are said to be primary targets, with bot activity estimated to dominate up to 80% of interactions.

In contrast, X has seen a significant drop in such manipulation following the introduction of its paid verification system, which limits mass account creation.

Despite the mounting evidence, experts say Washington remains slow to act. Regulatory bodies like the FCC have yet to crack down on telecoms hosting these systems & no federal statute currently criminalises the intentional radicalisation of US citizens by foreign actors.

Analysts argue that until such measures are implemented, the digital battlefield will remain dangerously unguarded.
