• IPCRESS is said to stand for Induction of Psychoneurosis by Conditioned Reflex under Stress. Ipcress dramatizes brainwashing in visually spectacular ways that exceed what’s plausibly documented, but its style reflects mid-1960s anxieties about media, feedback, and “mind as machine.” (ResearchGate)
• Real experiments (e.g. MKUltra) often had shaky evidence, mixed outcomes, internal contradictions, and moral / practical limits. (Harvard Kennedy School)
• Fiction tends to lean into tropes (trigger words, sleeper agents) that are more dramatic or conspiratorial than scientifically validated.
