Ever since the Salem Witch Trials, witches are those awesome and mostly gruesome female magic users, and they've evolved so much overtime and in different kinds of media. They've the usual traits such as cackling, wielding black arts, flying on broomsticks, wearing often opaque clothes, the works! They're as iconic for the spooky season, if not more, than pumpkins, bats, or the undead!
