Taurus 817: Seven Rounds at the Ready

Taurus has been on a roll with new revolvers and autos the last couple of years. One of the products of Taurus' golden age is the 817, a 7 shot .38 Spl +P two inch barreled revolver that doesn't change the equation much from Taurus' other successful concealed carry revolvers. Adding two extra rounds pulls the capacity up to compete with the single stack autos as now you have just as many rounds and standard 1911s do (if you don't top off after chambering) and are in the same ball part as the Beretta APX A1 Carry, Ruger EC9, Smith & Wesson Shield, Kimber Micro, and Sig P239. But those are all old platforms and the wide availability of high capacity autos Like Taurus' own GX4, Sig P365, S&W Shield Plus and Springfield Armory Hellcat still have a decisive firepower advantage. That being said a lot of people are more comfortable with a wheel gun, my Grandfather being one(even he recognized the 1911's inadequacies when he was in the Pacific). Taurus is far from the first company to stuff high round counts into snub nose revolvers. S&W have had their 627 and 327 available in snubbies for a fair bit, but those have been fairly exclusive pieces with price tags that suggested as much. Ruger's SP-101, S&W J-Frame, Charter Arms, well, everything and Rossi have all had a good pantheon of 5 shot revolvers that have served and solved a lot of problems for people. Its nice to see Taurus pushing limits with the revolver market, and not forgetting a sizable chunk of their customers.
Shooting the 817 reveals a mild mannered revolver that is easy to handle even with some more lively self defense ammo. The trigger is by no means anything special breaking at 10.25 pounds consistently in double action, and 5.5 pounds in single. The sights are the humble notch rear that machined into the top strap(that I incorrectly call the back strap in the video) and an interchangeable serrated front ramp in black. I struggle to resolve the light stainless steel rear notch with the black front sight. Some black nail polish is a mod that would fix that easily though. The recoil is well within manageable levels probably due to the 30.25 ounce weight and doesn't take the 817 to a needlessly heavy state for carry. If you are a wheel gun adherent then the 817 might be the next choice for your hip or glove box.
Special Thank you to Cameo Shooting and Education Complex for the generous use of their their epic facility.
