When we find ourselves torn between following spiritual promptings and giving in to our fleshly desires, we're experiencing the same ancient battle that has raged within humanity since the beginning. Just as Jacob had to wrestle with God to transform from a self-reliant schemer to Israel, the spiritual overcomer, we too must allow God's Word to perform divine surgery, cutting between soul and spirit, so our spiritual nature can triumph over the demands of our flesh.
