Findlay, OH - Police identified the man shot and killed by officers after he brandished a weapon at them when he opened his door.

Findlay Police said the man was Robert Norton, 90, of Findlay.

Officers were called out to the 1600 block of Cherry Lane around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a shooting. Once officers arrived at the scene, a dispatcher tried to contact the 911 caller, but no one answered.

Neighbor Sophia Weaver lives on the 1600 block of Cherry Lane. She said police initially went to her house and spoke to her mother.

“She was the first person that they talked to,” Weaver said.

Her mother did not hear any gunshots or know anything about the call. Police then moved on to a different house on the block, which Weaver’s mother thought was vacant.

“She was actually going to follow him and tell him, like, ‘Hey, I don’t think there’s anybody in that house,’” Weaver said. “And that’s when they started firing.”

Responding officers went to the door and a man who opened it brandished a gun at officers, the statement from the police department said.

They fired multiple rounds, shooting Norton. He was taken to an area hospital, where he died.

No officers were injured in the incident, and police did not say the man fired his weapon.

Investigators cleared the house and found no one else was there. The police department did not disclose whether they found any evidence of a previous shooting.
