SNAP recipients told to buy shelf-stable food or go to food banks as funding deadline looms

Millions of Americans who rely on SNAP food assistance could lose access to benefits starting Nov. 1 if the federal government shutdown continues.

The USDA warned that funding will run out for November’s payments, and several states — including Pennsylvania and Texas — have already announced plans to suspend benefits.

Food banks say they cannot meet the massive demand that would result, with Massachusetts alone facing a potential shortfall of 56 million meals.

State officials across the country have urged residents to use remaining benefits to buy non-perishable food, warning that they lack the funds to cover federal aid, NBC News has reported.

The crisis stems from a budget standoff in Washington, where Democrats and Republicans have yet to agree on a spending deal to reopen the government.
