Saint Augustine of Hippo (354–430 AD), born Aurelius Augustinus in Thagaste (modern-day Algeria), was one of the most influential theologians and philosophers in Christian history. He was raised by a Christian mother, Monica, and a pagan father, Patricius. After a youthful period of spiritual searching and philosophical exploration, Augustine converted to Christianity in 387 and was baptized by St. Ambrose. He became the Bishop of Hippo in 395 and spent much of his life writing and preaching. His most famous works include Confessions, a spiritual autobiography, and The City of God, a defense of Christianity in the face of the Roman Empire’s decline. Augustine’s ideas shaped Western Christianity and philosophy, particularly on topics like grace, free will, and the nature of the soul.
